Buying Books

Why | Buy Books | Merchandise | Donations | Sponsorship

Emerald City specialises in reviewing top quality science fiction and fantasy books. Some of these can be difficult to come by, especially if they are from small publishers, or are only published in the author's home country. However, there are a lot of potential options.

Firstly you can buy from The Aust Gate through this web site. This is an independent British-based bookstore run by Iain Emsley. At Emerald City we believe in supporting independent, specialist bookstores. Also The Aust Gate stocks books from small press publishers that cannot always get distribution through the major booksellers. Although The Aust Gate is British-based, you can pay for books in US Dollars.

In addition you can buy from Amazon or Amazon UK. (We'd do Canada as well if we could figure out how to get a Canadian bank account.) There are links to Amazon's US and UK shops (denoted by national flags). If only one flag is shown the book in question is only available in the one country.

Emerald City does receive commission for books that you buy through this web site. It doesn't affect the price that you pay, but it does give us a small income and helps keep the site free. On Amazon we get slightly more for books that we actually link to, but we get something for any sale we make, regardless of what it is. So if you are going to buy from Amazon you can help us by clicking through to their sites from here. Just use the buttons below.

When buying from Amazon, please bear in mind that the Emerald City review will probably have been created when the book was new, and only available in hardcover. You may want to check to see if a cheaper paperback version is now available. Also books are not always published at the same time on different sides of the Atlantic. A US reader may find it cheaper to buy the softcover from The Aust Gate or from Amazon's UK operation than to buy a hardcover locally, and vice versa. Books may also be out of print in one country but not in the other.

If you can't afford to buy newly released books now, you can try your local library. You won't get to keep the book, but you will get to read the latest releases in hardcover as soon as they are reviewed. If the library doesn't have the book, pester them to get it. Authors don't get as much money from books in libraries as from direct sales, but it all helps.
